The 25th – Still Christmas in Haiti

Today’s February 25th.  It’s two months since Christmas.  And less than a month till spring.

Riding around quake-stricken Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas, I keep seeing “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” decorations.

Of course.  Afterall, Georgetown barely had its holiday decor taken down by the second week of January.

And once the quake struck here, time stood still.  No municipal employees around to take down the above street banner.

At the same time, life goes on.  Seems like people walk and ride past rubble without a second glance.  As if it had been there all along.

This photo is from Leogane, a town 20 miles or so west of Port-au-Prince, which was 80 to 90% destroyed.

Joyeux Noel 2009

Bonne Annee 2010.

Maybe 2010 started out OK, the first week or so….

But not all the Christmas decorations I see were put up before the quake.  I meandered through the make-shift camp of families surrounding the Municipal Nursing Home, and noticed even the tin shacks had salvaged some for their shacks.

Oh blah dee.

Oh blah dah.

Life goes on….
